"Great for a couple nights on Sixth street"
Lots to like about the hotel - clean, great service, comfortable rooms: the location is very good for partying on sixth street and rainey street, however, after four nights, I was wishing we picked a hotel located more central downtown away from the noise and blight of sixth, where walks to the capitol, across the river to barton springs area and south […] congress wouldn't be so cumbersome. The hotel is right on the edge of sixth/downtown and the highway - nothing really of note is east (it actually gets rough pretty quickly), rather everything is west. If it matters to you: the pool area is a huge disappointment - miniature, located in a virtual wind tunnel, and receives no sunshine - only two tables and a half dozen chairs; the lounge is on the top floor and offers a nice view of Austin's skyline, but is lonely and depressing; mini-fridge in the room is a huge plus; check out the bakery/beer garden across the catwalk over to sixth. We and dozens of others had to wait around for hours in the hotel lobby because they were late in getting the rooms ready. Our room overlooked a junk yard and an interstate. We checked in past midnight after a long day of travel and we were looking forward to a good night's rest, but the sound of the interstate right below our room kept us up much of the night. We asked to change rooms but every room was booked. The manager was able move us the next day to a different room further away from the interstate. We thought that […] the hotel was trying to accommodate us, but the room turned out to be much smaller and it was right next to a group that was literally hosting a convention in their suite. The group was having a hospitality suite with drinking and socializing. We had a poorly insulated door connecting our room to theirs so we heard loud talking all day and until midnight for several days. As a bonus, the wheels on the bed frame were broken off and replaced with wooden boards that caused the bed to lean to one side. We felt like we were being punished for asking to change rooms. We had a room on the south side of the hotel on the 11th floor and did not notice the noise from the construction or the interstate. The bar on the top floor has a great view. I was extremely pleased with the Hilton Garden Inn. It is reasonably priced for a downtown hotel and is the perfect location for 6th street fun! The hotel has a walkway directly to 6th street so you don't have to risk driving after a night of hitting the local bars. The room was clean and the staff very friendly and eager to accommodate any request. […] My only dislike is that parking is not included with the hotel cost and a fee of $28 a night for valet parking is required. Beware of you check out cost for valet! "Easy walking distance to 6th street."
When I booked the room I thought I was booking a "bed and breakfast suite" and when I got to my room it wasn't a suite but a normal room. Actually a smaller room than most places I have stayed. I expected from the hotel room photos I saw on the internet to have a couple of chairs or sofa and a hot tub. We love to stay here because it's literally on 6th St. The crawling is minimal when your hotel is so close to your party location. Everyone was so nice when we arrived, they upgraded us but we asked for a downgrade. We needed two beds since it was a party of 5. The only thing I wouldn't recommend is the lounge breakfast. "Check under the beds..."
Well not only is valet outrageous at $26.00/night, the room we were staying was on the 15th floor but we still could hear all the traffic from the interstate. There were at least 4 different occasions where we heard fire trucks, ambulances or police sirens going off. Our sleep number beds did not work properly. The room was clean for the most part. […] Right before I was doing my last walk thru just to make sure none of our items were left, I look under my bed & find a bloody, nasty shirt that did not belong to my friend or I. You could tell it had been there for a while. It was the nastiest thing I've ever seen. I didn't tell the front desk about it because I had to get my friend to the airport & this was New Years Day. The woman who was regularly at the front desk, Astrid, was extremely helpful and accommodating. The rooms where nice, and the hotel was in a great location, very close to shopping, restaraunts, and bars. We really enjoyed our stay in Austin.
